Bond 10-188  Multi-Purpose Building
including an Auxiliary Gymnasium, Cafetorium with Stage to be used also as a Community Center, and Capital Improvements

Why now?
  • The school is in need of a new cafeteria and an auxiliary gymnasium. The community is in need of a gathering place.
  • Days Creek has been approved for a $4 million state-matching OSCIM grant, only obtained through a bond levy. There is no guarantee the funds will be available in the future.
  • Interest rates are currently low. Building costs are expected to rise so starting the building process now is financially prudent.
  • School enrollment keeps growing.

Why this building? Overview/Summary of Expenses
If approved, Measure 10-188 will finance:
  • Construction costs of a new building that includes:
    • Cafetorium & kitchen that accommodate 180+ occupants
    • Multi-purpose gymnasium for inclement weather recess, PE, athletics, large group assemblies
    • Stage/classroom and shared space for community events, assemblies, and special large group functions.
  • Enhanced Security, ADA, and safety improvements to existing facilities.
  • Repairs and deferred maintenance to existing school buildings and grounds.
  • Repurposing and remodeling current cafeteria areas that will increase classroom capacity.
  • Finance required “soft costs” - County permits, excavation, soil testing, and design.

Why the auxiliary gym?
  • The school has one gym for all grades K-12.
  • Additional space will allow common practice times, giving more students the opportunity to participate. Currently, practices for athletics begin early in the morning until late evening. Some students are not able to participate due to the times of practices.
  • Gives students a place to go when the main gym is being used for special assemblies, and functions that occur throughout the year. Some examples include: annual hearing/vision testing, pictures, dental treatments, special speakers/activities, holiday productions.
  • Place for elementary recess when there is inclement weather.
  • It will allow space for community gym activities like evening basketball and exercise classes.

Why the cafetorium?
  • The current cafeteria is inadequate, and several upgrades and repairs are needed. Instead of investing in an inadequate space, it will be wiser to create a new space.
  • Five separate lunch times for students are required due to the small capacity of the eating area. The new area is designed to seat 180+ students at one time if necessary.
  • Stage for student and community productions (elementary, secondary, FFA, athletic, social and community activities & events).

Why the kitchen?
  • The current kitchen is in need of various repairs including the purchase of new appliances, plumbing, venting, electrical and a total redesign.
  • New appliances and larger cook areas are necessary for hot meals made from scratch and for processing school-grown fruit and vegetables from the upcoming Farm to School program.
  • More space is needed as the student population continues to grow.
  • Increases opportunities to serve the community.

How will the community benefit from this?
  • The district considered community needs when designing the building. An enlarged cafetorium, the stage, and auxiliary gym will serve the needs of the community for performances, workouts, gatherings, reunions, funerals, and other events.

What about the money from the sale of Tiller?
  • The sale of Tiller brought in $350,000. That money is in an account and part has been used for capital improvements. In the event the building project costs more, we have funds to complete.

How much is this going to cost in taxes?
  • Approximately $1.80 per $1,000 assessed property value (estimate based on current assessment) for a $4 million bond. The state will match $4 million through a grant.
  • The amount paid each year can vary. The payment amount required each year is applied to the property on the rolls. Over time, the per thousand rate can decrease as property values grow.
  • Many of the top property values in the district are large corporations and will have to pay a large share of this bond.
  • Any excess funds can be used to pay the debt, thereby reducing the tax rate for that year(s).

Miscellaneous
  • The district has not had a bond initiative in over 30 years.

Would you like to visit the campus?
  • Days Creek Charter School will be hosting two Open Houses in the spring.

All information regarding bond cost, design of the building and location of the building are subject to change.
